Painters and sculpters have always enriched their inspiration from their elders' work.
They attended museums in order to learn their job, to search for technical or thematical examples. Copying is therefore an obliged counterpoint to the notion of learning.

During the 15th century,
many replicas of prestigious paintings were realised, resulting in a multiplication of retables and devotion paintings (Some paintings of the Virgin Mary were copied hundreds of times).

Later, "l'Infante MARGUERITE THERESE" from VELASQUEZ became a favourite to the copyists along with   le POUILLEUX from MURILLO which also became a source of inspiration for the likes of FANTIN LATOUR, CEZANNE etc...

COROT was copied by PICASSO, BRAQUE, JUAN GRIS.
INGRES copied HOLBEIN, LEONARD DE VINCI. "La JOCONDE" has been  copied 71 times !

Copying became, as a result, an essential discipline for all painters.

The Artemisia studio proposes a range of different ancient techniques such as wax-polish for  the FAYOUM portraits, wax for POMPEI, egg for MANTEGNA, oil for REMBRANDT, VELASQUEZ, dutch still-lives, etc...

With each period having its own technique, based essentially on the use of glacis and matter superposition.
